A very long time ago when I was studying art, a man who became a prominent mentor during those formative stages would say to me, “Tom you’re looking at it, but, you’re not seeing it”. At that time, I took his words to be that of the creative instructor to his student, which they were…But, now later in life, I learned that his words held much more significance. For in today’s world of turmoil and concern, I find that the vast majority of us are too distracted to even look, much less actually appreciate the nuances of the environment around them. The tragedy in all of this is that nature’s beauty is one of our few constants, it’s tranquility, it’s soothing resistance to the hurried pace of the masses is quietly there for all us who would simply take the time. In my works, I’ve tried to memorialize the words of my early mentor, wherein I have not only taken the time to look……but, to actually see.
Thank you for allowing me to share these impressions with you…
